The Houston Texans have announced that they will not pursue contract negotiations with quarterback C.J. Stroud once the regular season begins. General manager Nick Caserio stated that if an agreement is not reached before the Texans' season opener against the Buffalo Bills on September 13, all discussions will be suspended until next offseason.
Stroud, who was selected second overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, has already had his fifth-year option picked up by the Texans, ensuring he remains under team control through 2027. Caserio had previously indicated a possibility for an extension during training camp in late July, but no deal appears to be forthcoming.
In his three seasons with the Texans, the 24-year-old Stroud has led the team to the playoffs each year, boasting a record of 28-18. He was named the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023 and achieved a career-high completion rate of 64% in 2025, contributing to a successful 12-5 season that saw the Texans reach the divisional round of the playoffs.
However, Stroud faced challenges in the postseason, notably throwing five interceptions in a loss to New England, which ended the Texans' playoff run with a score of 28-16. Further details regarding the ongoing negotiations have not yet been disclosed.
