Marist Liufau, an outside linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys, is set to undergo surgery for a fractured forearm and is anticipated to be sidelined for several weeks. The injury occurred during a preseason game against the New Orleans Saints, specifically in the first quarter while he was making a tackle. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed the surgery could take place as early as Monday.
Schottenheimer praised Liufau's competitive spirit, stating, "What a great competitor. He'll be back." Liufau has been a consistent presence on the Cowboys' roster, participating in all 34 games since being drafted in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft from Notre Dame. Heading into his third season, he transitioned from inside linebacker to outside linebacker under the coaching of Christian Parker.
Liufau reflected on the challenges of adapting to his new position, expressing gratitude for the support he has received from teammates and coaches. He noted the importance of special teams, having increased his playing time from 35% in his rookie season to 75% last year, although his defensive snaps decreased.
As the Cowboys prepare to finalize their roster, Liufau's injury could influence their decisions. NFL teams can designate two players to return after missing at least the first four weeks of the season, and Liufau may qualify for this designation depending on the team's injury situation.
