TCU Athletics has reinstated media credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, resolving a conflict that began after the newspaper reported on a locker room incident. This dispute arose following coverage of an altercation that led to the dismissal of safety Jacob Fields.
On September 4, TCU announced the restoration of access, emphasizing that constructive discussions helped both sides reach an agreement. The university expressed respect for the Star-Telegram as an independent news outlet and indicated a desire to move forward as the season progresses. Jim Barnes, a representative for TCU, confirmed on social media that reporter Steven Johnson and his colleagues have regained full access.
The dispute originated from a report by Johnson published on August 18, which detailed escalating tensions in the locker room. The article claimed that coaches failed to address the situation adequately, and it was noted that head coach Sonny Dykes was not aware of the seriousness of the players' issues.
TCU officials stated that the revocation of credentials was linked to alleged threats against sophomore receiver Dozie Ezukanma, who was identified in a social media video after initially remaining unnamed.
The incident in question occurred on August 13, when Ezukanma claimed in an Instagram video that Fields punched him, resulting in a head injury. A TCU football staff member reported the incident to campus police the next day. Fields was dismissed from the team and subsequently charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury after he surrendered to Tarrant County police on August 30.
