Dallas Cowboys running back Malik Davis has received a fine of $6,735 from the NFL for unnecessary roughness due to illegal helmet use during a preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals. This infraction took place in the first quarter at the 12:07 mark, where Davis gained five yards on a carry. No penalty was called at the time of the play.
The fine was announced recently, as the NFL typically reveals all preseason penalties after the exhibition games have concluded. Davis was the only player from the Cowboys to be fined during the preseason. In comparison, the largest fine issued in the league was to Cleveland Browns offensive tackle Tytus Howard, who faced a $12,537 penalty for a similar infraction in Week 1 of the preseason.
Davis is currently in the second year of a two-year contract worth $2.1 million, with a base salary of $1.1 million for the 2026 season. The fine represents approximately 0.6% of his salary. The NFL states that all fines collected are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation to support athletes in need and promote health and safety initiatives across all levels of football.
Throughout the offseason, Davis competed for the backup running back position against teammates Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah. Despite initial expectations that Blue might secure the role, the Cowboys released both Blue and Mafah, ultimately granting Davis the backup spot behind starter Javonte Williams. Blue has since joined the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad, while Mafah remains a free agent.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer praised Davis for consistently proving his worth during the competition, highlighting his determination and performance. Following the initial roster decisions, the Cowboys claimed Emari Demercado off waivers to bolster their running back options, providing additional depth behind Williams and contributing to special teams.
