The Dallas Cowboys are preparing for the 2026 season with significant changes to their defense, particularly in the safety position under new coordinator Christian Parker. Last year's defense was rated as one of the worst in the NFL, allowing 511 points, prompting the team to make several key additions.

The safety group has seen a major overhaul, with only Malik Hooker and Markquese Bell returning from the previous year.

The Cowboys made headlines by signing Jalen Thompson, their most expensive free agent in over a decade, and also added PJ Locke, who has previous experience with Parker. Additionally, they selected Caleb Downs with the No. 11 pick in the draft, further strengthening their safety options.

Despite these changes, Bell's position on the roster has come into question, especially after he was a healthy scratch during a recent game against the Cardinals. Traditionally, the Cowboys tend to rest veterans they expect to keep on the final roster to prevent injuries.

Zach Wolchuk from 105.3 The Fan noted that Bell's absence from the game could indicate he is safe for now, although tough decisions loom regarding the safety group.

Bell's situation is complicated by his arrest in April for possession of a controlled substance and marijuana, which could affect his standing with the team. Despite the legal issues, Bell has been a valued member of the Cowboys since joining as an undrafted free agent in 2022, known for his versatility on the field.

He filled in at linebacker last season due to injuries on the team.

Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News speculated that the Cowboys might keep five safeties on their 53-man roster, with Bell's physicality in training camp working in his favor. The team's new defensive scheme under Parker could also provide Bell with opportunities to make a more significant impact this season. Further details about the final roster decisions are not yet clear.
