Auburn's fifth-year senior outside linebacker Chris Murray is stepping up as a critical player for the team following an injury to JJ Faulk during preseason camp. Murray, who missed the initial week and a half of practice, has shown impressive performance in recent days, according to Auburn coach Alex Golesh, who noted that Murray is now fully recovered and ready to contribute.
Murray is competing for a starting position alongside candidates Da'Shawn Womack and Jared Smith as the team prepares for its season opener against Baylor on September 5. Golesh emphasized Murray's maturity and experience, stating that he has been a steady presence on the field and is in contention for one of the two outside linebacker spots.
Originally starting his collegiate career at TCU in 2021, Murray transferred to Sam Houston State for two seasons before joining Auburn in 2025. During his first season with the Tigers, he recorded 15 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and 3.5 tackles for loss.
In March, the NCAA granted him a waiver for a sixth year of eligibility, allowing him to join the team late in the spring practice period.
Murray expressed his appreciation for his experience, stating that he can guide younger players on the team, including Jared Smith, whom he has been working closely with. He aims to help elevate the performance of the newcomers while also advancing his own career.
