Hammond, Tech Run Past ACU 33-10 Behind Efficient Passing

A Balanced Offensive Display

Will Hammond completed 26 of his 33 pass attempts for 298 yards and one touchdown, leading the Texas Tech Red Raiders to a 33-10 victory over the Abilene Christian Wildcats. The win improves Tech’s record to 1-0, while ACU falls to 0-2 on the season.

First Half Dominance

Texas Tech established control early, scoring 14 points in the first quarter through back-to-back rushing touchdowns. Quinten Joyner capped a drive with a 14-yard run, followed by J’Koby Williams powering in from 5 yards out. Both scores were converted by kicker Stone Harrington.

The second quarter saw both teams add field goals. Harrington extended Tech’s lead to 17-0 with a 23-yard kick before Abilene Christian’s Brandon Perez responded with a 41-yard field goal to put the Wildcats on the board at 3-17.

Third Quarter Field Goals

The third quarter was defined by kicking accuracy. Stone Harrington added three consecutive field goals for Texas Tech, including kicks of 28, 33, and 45 yards. These three scores pushed the margin to 26-3 at the break of the final period.

Closing Out the Game

Texas Tech sealed the win in the fourth quarter with two more touchdowns. Malcolm Simmons hauled in a 64-yard pass from Hammond for a score, making it 33-3. Abilene Christian managed to score late when Alex Broome returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, bringing the final margin to 33-10.

J’Koby Williams contributed significantly on the ground with 13 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown. Kenny Johnson led Tech in receiving with four catches for 76 yards.

For Abilene Christian, John David Black threw for 119 yards but also recorded one interception. Cristian Driver was the top receiver with eight catches for 93 yards. Alex Broome added 52 rushing yards on ten carries before his long kickoff return.

The game took place at Galaxy Stadium in Lubbock, Texas, with an attendance of 60,229.
