Muschamp's defensive strategy, while reminiscent of his predecessor Pete Kwiatkoski's approach, introduced innovative elements, particularly in the utilization of standout player Colin Simmons.
In the game, Simmons was primarily positioned in a seven- or loose five-technique outside the offensive tackle for approximately 80% of his plays. Notably, he also took on five snaps as an off-ball linebacker, a significant increase from the five percent of snaps he played in that role over his first two seasons with the Longhorns.
Among these snaps, Simmons acted as a quarterback spy on one occasion and as a looping blitzer on another, showcasing his versatility.
Muschamp implemented a 'Mint' front alignment, which typically involves a defensive tackle positioned head-up with the center and two defensive linemen on the inside shoulders of the offensive tackles. In this setup, Simmons was assigned the off-ball 'money' linebacker role, while Rasheem Biles took on the jack linebacker position.
This strategic shift allowed Simmons to demonstrate his adaptability, even though he encountered some challenges, such as falling for a quarterback fake on one play.
The Mint front was used in about 20% of the Longhorns' defensive plays. In subsequent plays, Simmons either remained off the field or returned to the jack linebacker role, as Muschamp opted for blitzes or stunts that kept him out of pass coverage.
