Head volleyball coach Sam Erger of Southern Methodist University (SMU) was suspended for two games due to an impermissible communication, as confirmed by a university spokesperson. The suspension was self-imposed by SMU Athletics and took place on August 29 and 30.
Erger was absent during the Mustangs' matches against Colorado State and UC Davis, where the team achieved victories without her leadership. SMU won against Colorado State in four sets and defeated UC Davis in five sets. Sophomore outside hitter Suli Davis notably excelled, achieving her first double-double with 22 kills and 14 digs against Colorado State.
Erger returned to the bench on September 2, during a match against TCU, where the Mustangs lost in five sets. In that contest, Davis again led the team with 15 kills. Freshman Bojana Ambulija made a strong debut, contributing 13 kills.
Erger has been the head coach of the SMU volleyball program since February 2022 and has led the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet Sixteen finish in 2025. Last season, the Mustangs recorded 27 wins, tying the program record for most wins in a season.
