The Houston Texans have received positive updates regarding Tank Dell's recovery from a significant knee injury, but the team is not rushing his return. General manager Nick Caserio confirmed that Dell is making progress, yet emphasized that the team will not set a specific timeline for his return, particularly with Week 5 approaching.
Dell has been placed on Reserve/Injured, which means he will miss at least the first four games of the regular season. While Caserio noted that Dell is closer to returning than he was at the start of training camp, he acknowledged that further recovery is necessary before Dell can safely participate in games.
Caserio pointed out that being "close" does not equate to being ready to play, especially given the severity of Dell's injury.
In December 2024, Dell suffered a dislocated kneecap along with multiple ligament tears during a game against Kansas City, which sidelined him for the entire 2025 season. His recovery has involved extensive physical and mental rehabilitation, making his return a complex process.
Caserio highlighted that Dell has shown improvement in his quickness, change-of-direction skills, and hands during shorter and intermediate route drills. However, the crucial aspect of his recovery involves regaining his top-end speed, which is essential for his style of play. Dell, who stands at 5-foot-10 and weighs 165 pounds, relies on acceleration and agility rather than physical dominance to create separation from defenders.
Before his injury, Dell was a key player for the Texans, catching 98 passes for 1,376 yards and 10 touchdowns in his first two NFL seasons. His ability to stretch defenses and create opportunities for teammates made him a valuable asset in the offense.
