The SMU Mustangs are relying on two new wide receiver transfers, Jalen Hale from Alabama and Yannick Smith from East Carolina, to strengthen their receiving corps during fall camp. This comes after the team lost its top two receivers from the previous season, Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson, who together amassed over 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns before graduating.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings, who is recovering from a hand injury, has been unable to utilize several key offensive players, including tight ends Matthew Hibner and RJ Maryland, as well as running backs TJ Harden and Chris Johnson Jr. Despite these challenges, Hale and Smith have demonstrated their potential to contribute significantly.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins, filling in for Jennings, praised Smith's ability to make contested catches due to his size, while noting Hale's speed and capability to evade defenders. Hale, a former five-star recruit, had a promising start at Alabama but faced setbacks due to a severe knee injury that sidelined him for the entire 2024 season.
He has since regained his form at SMU, showcasing his explosive playmaking ability.
Wide receivers coach Rob Likens emphasized Hale's experience from playing in the SEC and his toughness, which he believes will be beneficial to the team's offensive strategy. Smith, who has over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns from his time at East Carolina, is noted for his aggressive style and ability to make difficult catches, which aligns with the Mustangs' downfield passing approach.
In addition to the transfers, senior Yamir Knight returns after a strong performance in the Holiday Bowl, where he was named Offensive MVP. Sophomore Jalen Cooper is also expected to play a larger role after a productive freshman season.
