The Dallas Cowboys have made the decision to cut cornerback Josh Butler from their 53-man roster, marking the end of his three-year tenure with the team. Butler's release comes after he fought hard to revive his football career, having previously navigated through two spring leagues before joining the Cowboys in 2023.
In a message shared on social media following his release, Butler emphasized his performance, stating, "At the end of the day! My entire time with the Cowboys I've never given up a single touchdown preseason or regular season or a pass over 20 yards." He expressed gratitude for his time with the Cowboys, noting his journey back to football after a lengthy absence.
During the preseason, Butler showcased his abilities with six tackles and demonstrated his skills as a shutdown corner. Over the last three seasons, he participated in six games, primarily in 2024 and 2025, accumulating 26 tackles, five pass deflections, and one sack. However, he did not play in the 2023 season due to competition and an ACL injury that limited his participation in 2025.
Despite his solid performance, Butler's future remains uncertain as the Cowboys could either look to claim him or allow another NFL team to pick him up. There is a possibility that he may be considered for the practice squad, given his contributions as a depth player.
