As summer temperatures rise, daily water usage in Dallas has begun to exceed 600 million gallons, compared to the average of nearly 400 million gallons treated and delivered daily by Dallas Water Utilities (DWU). This surge in demand places additional stress on water resources and the city’s infrastructure.
Increased pipeline pressure and flow rates can lead to water main breaks and leaks, requiring DWU repair crews to work around the clock to identify and fix issues. During these repairs, some customers may experience brief service interruptions. DWU crews typically notify affected residents or businesses by leaving a door notice before 9 p.m.
To help manage system demands during periods of extreme heat, DWU is requesting that residents and businesses adhere to the updated City of Dallas Water Conservation Ordinance, which was revised in May 2026. The ordinance strengthens watering restrictions and encourages additional water-saving practices.
Key requirements include following the year-round Twice-Weekly Watering Schedule and prohibiting the use of automatic irrigation systems or hose-end sprinklers between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on any day of the year. This time restriction previously applied only from April 1 through October 31.
