Dallas County officials have decided to rename a facility at the Oak Cliff Government Center to honor Sylvia Collins, a community activist who died in an apartment explosion in May. The Dallas County Commissioner’s Court made the announcement on Tuesday, recognizing Collins for her long-standing dedication to civic engagement and neighborhood advocacy.

Collins was one of three individuals killed when her residence exploded earlier this year. In response to her passing, Commissioners Theresa Daniels and Elba Garcia spoke about her contributions during a court session. They highlighted her decades of work in voter outreach, civil rights, and local affairs.

Commissioner Daniels noted that Collins had a significant impact across the county. She stated that naming a room after such a dedicated community activist serves as an appropriate recognition of Collins’ efforts. The space will officially be known as the Sylvia Collins Community Room.

Commissioner Garcia emphasized Collins’ passion for democracy and her consistent encouragement of others to vote. Garcia recalled how Collins’ voting precinct was located at her building, and she often guided residents to the Oak Cliff Government Center to cast their ballots. According to Garcia, Collins ensured that people exercised their right to vote.

The county plans to hold a formal dedication ceremony for the new room during Hispanic Heritage Month in the fall. No specific date for the event has been provided yet.
