Dallas Independent School District students are using the summer band camp at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts to strengthen their musical abilities and explore future opportunities. The program provides professional instruction and masterclasses for young musicians across the district. Instruments are provided at no cost to remove barriers to access.

Christian R., a recent graduate of Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy at A. Maceo Smith, attended the camp for five years before departing for the University of Texas to study Music Education. He credited the program with helping him grow as a clarinetist and become a student leader. Christian noted that he enjoyed taking masterclasses and learning from instructors who became his mentors. He described returning to the camp as a way to reconnect with fellow musicians and learn from those mentors.

Greer C., a clarinetist from J.L. Long Middle School, stated that attending the camp allowed her to step out of her comfort zone and play with older students who had more experience. Matthew A., who will enter the ninth grade at Booker T. Washington next school year, attended the camp for the second time this year. He described the experience as fun and noted that he met many people and improved as a musician.

The camp serves as a reminder for students like Christian of their progress and future goals. While Christian is concluding his participation as a student, the district highlights the program's role in shaping young musicians. The announcement notes that former participants may eventually return to inspire the next generation of students. The program continues to offer a structured environment for students to develop their talents within the district.
