Willie Johnson has been named the Dallas Independent School District's Secondary Principal of the Year. The honor recognizes his leadership at South Oak Cliff High School, where he has served as principal since 2016. The announcement coincides with the school receiving a score of 89 on accountability from the Texas Education Agency.
Johnson attributes the recognition to the collective effort of the school community rather than individual achievement. He stated that the award signifies that the school has performed well and that the success belongs to everyone. He described the feeling as euphoric and noted that the school has celebrated together as a staff.
The principal’s approach is rooted in the belief that students facing significant obstacles can achieve the same results as their peers when provided with the correct environment and support. Johnson often uses the analogy that if a flower does not grow, one must change its environment.
This philosophy has helped maintain a stable faculty, with the school retaining 90 percent of its teachers year after year.
