The gymnasium at Skyline High School hosted the annual Lone Star Challenge, an academic competition for elementary school students across the Dallas Independent School District. Organized by the Dallas ISD Department of Student Activities, the event brought together hundreds of students to demonstrate their knowledge and teamwork skills.

The Lone Star Challenge tests teams of nine members in mathematics, science, literature, and social studies. This year’s curriculum focused heavily on Africa, requiring students to study topics such as the continent’s complex medical history and its geography. Participants learned about contagious diseases, vaccine development, and human biology. Social studies topics included the history and culture of South Sudan and ancient Egypt.

Teams prepared for the competition by practicing after school, focusing on collaboration to solve difficult study guide questions. Leslie Brisendine, an instructor at Downtown Montessori, noted that the event transforms individuals into a cohesive team. She observed that students encourage one another to learn the material and develop critical thinking, time management, and resilience.

The atmosphere in the gym combined academic concentration with energetic school spirit, featuring an annual costume parade and school posters. Students sacrificed their Saturday to represent their schools in the challenging final test. After the competition concluded and medals were awarded, students left with a sense of pride in their abilities.

Titus B., a student from Downtown Montessori at Ida B. Wells Academy, stated that he enjoyed learning about contagious diseases and how the human body functions. Gisselle M., a student from Nancy Moseley Elementary School, shared that she learned about the daily challenges faced by girls in South Sudan and historical practices in Egypt. Many participants expressed excitement about maintaining this tradition in the upcoming school year.
