Dallas developer Ray Washburne indicated he would welcome the opportunity to serve as mayor but confirmed he has no immediate plans to seek the office in the upcoming election. He made these remarks during a joint interview with NBC5 and The Dallas Morning News, appearing on NBC5’s Lone Star Politics program.
Washburne emphasized that his current focus remains on his role as co-chair of the Dallas Host Committee for the Republican National Convention. The committee has secured $45 million in private donations to help cover expenses associated with the event, which opens Wednesday at American Airlines Center.
Washburne stated that organizers intend to pay most of the city’s convention-related costs so that taxpayers are not financially responsible.
Although he expressed confidence in his ability to lead, Washburne noted that he would need to relocate from Highland Park to Dallas to meet residency requirements for the office. The city mandates that mayoral candidates live within its limits for at least six months prior to the filing deadline.
When asked about his interest in the position, Washburne cited his long-standing connections to the area, his investments in downtown properties, and the employment opportunities created by his businesses. He suggested he understands the necessary vision for the city but did not specify what those plans entail during the interview.
