City of Denton Animal Services intercepted a package containing 191 turtles and tortoises after a local FedEx Office reported an unusual attempted shipment. The shelter stated that the FedEx location contacted them upon discovering the animals inside the package.
Upon receiving the report, animal services personnel took the reptiles into custody. The animals were temporarily housed by the shelter while officials notified the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The federal agency subsequently opened an investigation into the matter.
The shelter acknowledged the support from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, noting their quick response and partnership in handling the situation. Following the initial intake and investigation steps, the animals were transferred to the Dallas Zoo, where they are currently housed.
In a social media post, the shelter described the event as "Business not as usual." They added that the incident demonstrates how their team supports the community through coordination with animal welfare colleagues in unique situations. The shelter expressed gratitude for the strong partnerships that helped manage the rescue.
