Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux has outlined a strategic shift within the Dallas Police Department aimed at transforming the agency into the most proactive law enforcement body in the United States. During an appearance on the program *Let's Talk Local*, Comeaux explained that the department is moving away from a reactive posture that relies heavily on responding to emergency calls. Instead, officers are being directed to actively seek out individuals with felony warrants and other serious offenses.
Comeaux emphasized that this approach involves daily collaboration with federal partners to target serious offenders. He stated that the department is specifically looking for individuals involved in drug sales and other criminal activities, noting that the goal is to disrupt these operations before they escalate. The chief indicated that this proactive stance is part of a broader effort to reduce crime rates across the city.
A significant component of this strategy involves rebranding the department and fostering a stronger internal culture. Comeaux credited these efforts for a recent surge in interest from potential recruits. The department recently hosted a three-day recruiting event that attracted 337 applicants, a figure the chief described as unprecedented for Dallas. He noted that the goal is to ensure that officers not only join the department but also remain with it long-term.
To support this growth, Comeaux has implemented changes in leadership and staffing structures. The department is civilianizing certain key positions, such as communications and human resources, to allow sworn officers to focus exclusively on policing duties. Comeaux compared his role to that of a general manager for a sports team, stating that his responsibility is to place personnel in positions where they can succeed.
