Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux has announced the creation of a new Dallas Police Foundation designed to supplement department resources and improve officer welfare. The initiative aims to fund needs that fall outside the regular municipal budget, with Comeaux stating the goal is to support divisions that identify essential items or services not currently covered by standard funding.
Comeaux explained that the concept for the foundation emerged from discussions about strengthening police support structures in the city. He noted that the foundation is now open to contributions and will address requests ranging from significant operational needs to smaller items intended to boost morale. As an example of these smaller but meaningful requests, Comeaux cited officers asking for chairs with two armrests at a station, arguing that improved working conditions help officers perform better.
Officer mental health remains a central focus for the department. Comeaux emphasized the importance of building a culture where personnel feel comfortable seeking counseling to process the traumatic situations they encounter. The department’s wellness unit assists officers in managing stress to maintain readiness on the job.
Regarding public safety strategies, Comeaux discussed the RightCare team, which pairs police officers with trained mental health professionals for appropriate calls. While officers still respond alone to immediate threats, such as individuals brandishing weapons, the team addresses situations involving individuals who may need assistance but do not pose a direct danger. The department also utilizes its Homeless Outreach Team to collaborate with nonprofit organizations while enforcing laws, balancing compassion with legal obligations.
Comeaux identified downtown Dallas as a top priority, linking public safety directly to the city’s ability to attract businesses, residents, and investment. He stated that the department will engage directly with business owners and entrepreneurs considering the area. To support this goal, Comeaux highlighted a new joint operations center in downtown, regular mounted patrols, motor units, and increased enforcement activities.
