Mayor Eric Johnson announced on Friday that the committee on government efficiency will be disbanded following its September 8 meeting. This marks the end of the group, which was established one year ago.
In a memo to council members, Johnson expressed gratitude for their efforts in discussing the reduction of administrative bloat, noting that these discussions were reflected in the city manager’s $5.6 billion budget proposal.
The mayor’s memo emphasized the need for a unified approach to city governance. Johnson stated that the council must avoid working in isolated groups or being distracted by personal disagreements. He added that the residents of Dallas expect their representatives to collaborate and deliver tangible results.
In addition to ending the efficiency committee, Johnson is dissolving the ad hoc committee on pensions. He indicated that this group has already contributed to a funding plan for the police and fire pension system. The announcement also includes leadership changes for several other standing committees.
Council member Lorie Blair will assume the chairmanship of the housing and homelessness committee. Council member Gay Donnell Willis will take the lead on public safety. Both of these roles were previously held by Far North Dallas council member Cara Mendelsohn, who will now serve as the second-in-command for the housing committee.
