Fort Worth, located approximately 31 miles west of Dallas, is observing the upcoming anniversary of the 1980 heat wave with a continued focus on protecting residents from extreme temperatures. The historic event, which occurred on June 26, remains one of the most significant periods of extreme heat in Texas history. While current summer temperatures have not yet matched those record levels, officials and community organizers note that the combination of heat and humidity can still pose serious risks, particularly for seniors and people with chronic medical conditions.
For the past decade, Darryl Washington, president of The Washington International All-Purpose Foundation, has led efforts to distribute window air conditioning units to families across Fort Worth. The foundation typically installs more than 50 units each summer, aiming to provide relief and help vulnerable individuals remain safely in their homes during dangerous heat spells.
The Fort Worth Police and Fire Department assist with these installations, ensuring that each unit is delivered safely, operates correctly, and is installed properly. This collaborative approach helps address the critical need for cooling resources among elderly and medically vulnerable populations.
The next installation is scheduled for Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at 1109 East Morningside Drive, Fort Worth, TX 76104. This specific effort will benefit an elderly woman, highlighting the ongoing necessity for such support systems.
Community members, businesses, and sponsors interested in supporting the initiative by purchasing additional air conditioning units are encouraged to contact Darryl Washington directly. Donations and assistance can be arranged by calling (817) 938-7464.
