A Dallas man has died following a two-vehicle collision on Maple Avenue late Friday night, according to the Dallas Police Department.
The incident occurred just before midnight when authorities say the victim was walking in the roadway. An SUV traveling southbound struck him, sending his body more than 30 feet away from the initial point of impact.
The force of the collision propelled the man into the rear of a Waymo autonomous vehicle that was traveling in the opposite direction. The Waymo vehicle was unoccupied at the time of the crash.
Waymo officials stated that their vehicle’s sensors detected the pedestrian prior to the impact. The company noted that the vehicle had slowed to approximately 5 miles per hour when the collision occurred. After the incident, the vehicle came to a complete stop, and the company’s Event Response Team coordinated with responding officers.
The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. His identity has not been released, and the investigation remains ongoing.
