Alvarez Powers Late Rally

Yordan Alvarez provided the decisive blow in the ninth inning, launching a two-run home run to center field that capped a high-scoring affair at Daikin Park. His 424-foot shot on Saturday, July 4, 2026, pushed the Houston Astros ahead 10-8 in a game that featured six total home runs and significant offensive production from both rosters. The win improved the Astros’ record to 44-47, while the Tampa Bay Rays fell to 52-34.

Early Explosions Define Contest

The game’s momentum shifted rapidly in the early innings as both teams traded power. The Rays struck first in the top of the first inning when Wander Franco’s teammate, Franco, homered to left center. However, Houston responded immediately in the bottom of the frame. Alvarez launched a 403-foot homer to left center, and Jose Altuve scored to give the Astros a 2-1 lead.

Tampa Bay regained the lead in the second inning when Jose Siri homered to right center, scoring one run to make it 3-2. The Rays extended their advantage in the third inning through a combination of power and base-running. A sacrifice fly by Randy Arozarena scored one run, followed by a single from Yandy Diaz that brought another run home. A critical sequence saw one runner steal home and another steal second, adding another run to the tally and making the score 6-2 in favor of Tampa Bay.

Pitching Struggles and Continued Offense

The Rays’ offense continued to pile on runs in the fourth inning. A groundout resulted in a run scoring on an error, and a subsequent home run by Wander Franco to right center added two more runs, extending the lead to 7-4. Houston began to chip away at the deficit in the fifth inning when Alvarez singled to left, scoring one run to make it 7-5.

The seventh inning proved to be the turning point for the Astros. DeLuca homered to left to narrow the gap to 8-6. Alvarez followed with a sacrifice fly that scored a run, making it 8-7. Paredes then singled to left, bringing another run home to tie the game at 8-8. Dezenzo added an RBI single to right field, putting the Astros ahead 9-8 before Alvarez’s ninth-inning heroics sealed the 10-8 victory.

Pitching Performances

Hunter Brown started for Houston, pitching four innings and allowing six earned runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts. He was supported by Nate Pearson, who pitched one scoreless inning, and Cristian Javier, who threw two innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out four. Bryan King and Josh Hader closed out the game, with Hader earning the win by pitching a perfect final inning.

For Tampa Bay, Drew Rasmussen took the loss after five innings, giving up five earned runs on six hits. Cole Sulser and Garrett Cleavinger also gave up runs, while Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Casey Legumina entered the game in the ninth inning but could not prevent the final two runs from scoring, taking the loss.
