The Houston Texans have announced roster changes following injuries to Graham Mertz and Joshua Pitsenberger. Mertz, who was already confirmed to have suffered a season-ending knee injury during the preseason opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, has been placed on the Reserve/Injured list.
Pitsenberger also sustained an ankle injury late in the game, prompting the Texans to make these roster adjustments to accommodate the addition of quarterback Brett Rypien.
Mertz's injury occurred shortly before halftime, and he had previously faced a significant injury in college, tearing his ACL while at Florida in 2024. The Texans are now short-handed at both quarterback and running back positions, with Davis Mills and Noah Whittington stepping in as starters for the game against the Chargers.
In addition to Mertz and Pitsenberger, the Texans are dealing with multiple injuries across the roster. Reports indicate that Ja'Marcus Ingram is dealing with a shoulder issue, while Collin Wright has a soft tissue strain and is day to day. Other players, including Jake Hansen, Brevin Jordan, Jawhar Jordan, and British Brooks, are also facing various injuries.
Despite these setbacks, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans remains optimistic, noting that the team has managed to keep most of its starters healthy. The Texans will continue to monitor the situation as they prepare for the remainder of training camp and the preseason, with further roster moves anticipated as they navigate this challenging time.
