Southern Methodist University (SMU) has appointed Derek Gossler as the new Senior Associate Athletic Director for Revenue Generation. This decision aligns with the university's strategy to enhance its competitive edge in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) by focusing on revenue generation, which is critical in modern college sports.
Gossler brings over 15 years of experience in fundraising, ticketing, and commercial strategy, most recently serving as Senior Associate A.D. for Development and Chief Revenue Officer at the University of Wyoming. During his time there, he significantly increased cash and pledges through the Cowboy Joe Club and achieved record levels in premium seating and ticket revenue.
Prior to his role at Wyoming, Gossler worked at the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he was instrumental in achieving five consecutive years of record fundraising. His experience also includes significant contributions to Arizona State University, where he helped raise $86 million in a major fundraising campaign and assisted in launching the men's hockey program through substantial donor contributions.
Gossler's extensive background across various athletic departments positions him well to address SMU's needs as it competes in one of the largest and wealthiest markets in the nation. He aims to maximize revenue through innovative strategies and strengthen relationships with fans, supporters, and corporate partners.
With SMU's ongoing efforts to elevate its athletic programs on the national stage, Gossler's hiring signals a commitment to maintaining momentum in revenue generation as the Mustangs transition into the ACC.
