WACO, Texas — DJ Lagway, a quarterback who faced significant challenges during his time at the University of Florida, has transferred to Baylor University in search of a new beginning. Following a disappointing season where he threw five interceptions in a single game against LSU, Lagway found himself in a difficult emotional state, prompting his mother, Nikita, to travel to Florida to support him.
Upon her arrival, she discovered that DJ was feeling broken and overwhelmed. Despite the pressures of being seen as a potential savior for the team, he struggled with feelings of depression and frustration. His mother reassured him, but DJ expressed doubts about his situation, saying, "I think God forgot about me."
Now at Baylor, Lagway is experiencing a renewed sense of optimism. He is closer to home and has a familiar connection with the program, as his father played for Baylor and he had previously been recruited by head coach Dave Aranda. After a month of training at Baylor, Aranda recognized the emotional struggles Lagway was facing and encouraged him to express his feelings more openly.
During a candid moment in Aranda's office, Lagway vented his frustrations, marking a turning point in his mental health journey. Since then, he has become more communicative with his coaches and teammates. Lagway describes his new environment as a welcome change, noting, "Life down here is slower. I'm thankful for that."
As the Bears prepare to kick off their season against Auburn, Lagway's performance will be closely watched. He enters this new chapter with a mix of expectations, having been a highly regarded recruit with numerous accolades, including being named the National High School Quarterback of the Year.
