As the Dallas Cowboys prepare for their second preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals, the competition for the backup quarterback position has become a focal point. With starting quarterback Dak Prescott and most of the first-string players not participating in the exhibition games, the spotlight is on Sam Howell and Joe Milton, who are vying for the QB2 role.

Howell started the first preseason game against Seattle, followed by Milton in the second half. Coach Brian Schottenheimer noted that Howell was chosen for his consistency in practice, while both quarterbacks have shown promise.

In addition to the quarterback situation, concerns have arisen regarding right tackle Terence Steele, who has struggled with consistency during practices. Schottenheimer acknowledged that Steele needs to improve, especially after a challenging performance against the Los Angeles Rams. Offensive coordinator Clayton Adams emphasized the need for Steele to find stability in his play, as the team seeks to support him in his seventh year.

Meanwhile, the running back position is also under scrutiny, particularly with Jaydon Blue dealing with a shoulder injury that has sidelined him for much of the week. Blue was previously seen as a frontrunner for the backup role behind Javonte Williams, but his recent performance and injury status have created uncertainty about his availability for the upcoming game.

In a lighter note, safety Jalen Thompson, who experienced a memorable moment during joint practices with the New Orleans Saints, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming game. Thompson was involved in a notable incident where he was body slammed by a Saints player, which has garnered attention but also served as a rare opportunity for him to engage with another team before the regular season begins.

The Cowboys continue to navigate these preseason challenges as they look to finalize their roster ahead of the regular season, with key battles and player performances shaping their decisions moving forward.
