Prism Health North Texas will hold a free Healthy Start to School Bash in Dallas next month, giving children a backpack of school supplies and connecting families with health services ahead of the 2026-2027 school year.

The event runs Saturday, Aug. 8, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Prism Health North Texas Oak Cliff Health Center, 219 Sunset Avenue, Suite 116-A. Each child who attends will receive a free backpack with school supplies, while supplies last.

Alongside the giveaway, the bash offers sports physicals, dental screenings, vaccines and help scheduling primary care appointments, along with free haircuts. Organizers said the services are meant to ease the back-to-school crunch for families who often juggle appointments, transportation and multiple providers.

"We want families to know affordable health care is available in their neighborhood," said Kaitlyn Holmes, community marketing manager for Prism Health North Texas. "Hosting events like the Healthy Start to School Bash allow us to meet families where they are, get familiar with neighbors and connect the community to services throughout the year."

Leslie Redden, a registered nurse and pediatric care provider with the organization, said the aim is to build trust with parents. "I tell parents all the time that if it's important to them, it's important to me. No concern is too small," Redden said.

"We want families to feel comfortable asking questions, getting answers and knowing they have a trusted place to turn for care throughout the year."

Prism Health North Texas provides primary care, pediatrics, women's health, behavioral health, dental care, HIV prevention and treatment, and pharmacy services. It accepts private insurance, Medicaid, Medicare and CHIP, and offers a sliding fee scale based on income for patients without insurance. The event will also feature food, music and family-friendly activities.
