The Texas Transportation Commission announced a new statewide transportation plan on August 26 that includes significant funding for North Texas. The Unified Transportation Program outlines a decade of potential investment, with the Dallas and Fort Worth districts of the Texas Department of Transportation set to receive a combined $16.5 billion.
This allocation is intended to address safety, mobility, and infrastructure needs while reducing congestion across the region.
Of the total $138 billion statewide plan, $95 billion is designated for construction projects, while the remaining $43 billion covers development and routine maintenance. Tony Hartzel, a public information officer for TxDOT’s Dallas district, stated that the regional funding aims to improve system reliability and tackle critical infrastructure gaps.
A portion of these funds, specifically $491 million for the Dallas district and $200 million for the Fort Worth district, is tied to the Texas Clear Lanes initiative, a strategy focused on alleviating traffic bottlenecks.
Specific projects have already received additional funding under this program, including segments of Interstate 35W in Denton County and Interstate 345 in Dallas County. However, Hartzel noted that official start dates for these works have not yet been established. Other projects within the districts are currently under consideration for funding adjustments as the agency moves forward with its planning.
