The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will enhance patrols on waterways during the Independence Day weekend, running from July 3 to July 5. This initiative is part of "Operation Dry Water," a national campaign aimed at promoting safe boating practices and reducing incidents related to alcohol and drug use on the water.
The campaign involves collaboration between Kentucky game wardens and various law enforcement agencies to raise awareness about boating laws and to prevent accidents caused by impaired judgment. According to officials, substances like alcohol and drugs can significantly impair a person's ability to operate a boat safely, affecting their judgment, balance, and reaction times.
Capt. Jerrod Alley, the boating law administrator for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, emphasized the dangers of intoxicated boating. He noted that all boating activities require quick perception and decision-making, which can be severely hampered by the influence of intoxicants. Alley warned that often, intoxicated operators only recognize the risks they pose once an accident has occurred.
Boating officials are urging individuals to designate a sober operator and ensure that all necessary safety equipment is on board and in good condition. They highlighted that many fatal accidents occur when individuals fall overboard, particularly when they are not wearing properly fitted life jackets.
For those seeking more information about Kentucky's boating laws, the Kentucky Fishing and Boating Guide is accessible online at fw.ky.gov and at locations where fishing and hunting licenses are sold. Additional details about the national campaign can also be found through Operation Dry Water.
