Power Display Defines High-Scoring Affair

James Wood delivered a historic offensive performance for the Washington Nationals, hitting a four-run home run that helped secure a 12-11 victory over the Houston Astros on Monday. The slugger’s explosive output was the centerpiece of a game that featured six total home runs and 23 combined runs. Wood’s blast in the fifth inning extended the Nationals' lead significantly, showcasing the power disparity that ultimately decided the contest at Nationals Park.

Early Exchange and Third-Inning Surge

The Astros struck first in the top of the first inning when Walker doubled to center field, allowing Paredes to score for a 1-0 advantage. Washington responded in the same frame as Mead doubled to center, bringing Wood home to tie the game at 1-1. The momentum shifted in the second inning when Altuve launched a three-run homer to left field, putting Houston ahead 4-1. Shewmake and Matthews were the beneficiaries of the long ball.

The third inning proved pivotal for the Nationals. Diaz homered to left to cut the deficit to 4-3, followed by a single from García Jr. that scored Nuñez. Mead then singled to left, driving in Wood to make it 6-3. The inning culminated with Abrams launching a three-run homer to right, tying the game at 6-6 and energizing the home crowd. Washington took the lead in the fifth inning when Millas hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Abrams to make it 6-7. The Nationals' offense exploded next when Wood homered to center, clearing the bases to extend the lead to 12-6. Crews, Young, and Nuñez all crossed the plate on the play.

Astros Rally Falls Short

Houston began to chip away at the deficit in the sixth inning. Shewmake grounded into a double play but managed to score on the action, making the score 12-7. The Astros continued to press in the eighth inning. Shewmake doubled to right, scoring Wade Jr. to bring the score to 12-8. Matthews then followed with a three-run home run to left, scoring Diaz and Shewmake to tighten the game to 12-11. Despite the late rally, the Astros could not complete the comeback.

Pitching Decisions and Final Record

Washington starter Miles Mikolas earned the win, pitching six innings and allowing seven earned runs on nine hits. He was supported by Cole Henry, who pitched 1.2 innings, and Clayton Beeter, who secured the save with 1.1 scoreless innings. Houston’s Mike Burrows took the loss after pitching 4.1 innings and allowing seven earned runs. AJ Blubaugh, Nate Pearson, and Enyel De Los Santos pitched the remaining frames for the Astros.

The victory improved the Washington Nationals' record to 47-45. The Houston Astros fell to 45-48. The game drew an attendance of 11,092 fans to the District of Columbia venue.
