Oakland Athletics pitcher Jacob Lopez struck out nine batters over six innings, setting the stage for a dramatic offensive turnaround that snapped a recent losing streak. The Athletics defeated the Houston Astros 4-3 on Saturday at Daikin Park, with 31,009 fans in attendance. The win improved Oakland’s record to 50-80, while the Astros fell to 65-65.

The game featured two home runs and a crucial defensive stand by the visiting bullpen.

The scoring began in the third inning when Dalton Walton hit a 422-foot home run to center field, giving the Athletics a 1-0 lead. Houston responded in the fourth inning as Jose Diaz singled to left field, allowing Walker to score and tie the game at 1-1.

The Astros took the lead in the seventh inning when Nick Varsho hit a 358-foot home run to left field, making it 2-1. Shortly after, Luis Pena singled to center, scoring Wade Jr. and extending Houston’s advantage to 3-1.

The decisive momentum shifted in the eighth inning. Brock Holt scored on a wild pitch by Bennett Sousa, narrowing the gap to 3-2. The Athletics tied the game at 3-3 when Gelof scored on a single by Butler.

Finally, with the bases loaded, Heim grounded out to shortstop, allowing Butler to score and put Oakland ahead 4-3. The bullpen then sealed the victory, with Luis Medina earning the win and Elvis Alvarado recording the save.

Lopez pitched six innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out nine. For Houston, Hunter Brown pitched 5.2 innings, giving up seven hits and one earned run. The Astros’ bullpen struggled in the eighth, with Sousa taking the loss after allowing three earned runs.

The Athletics’ rally in the final two frames proved decisive, as they outscored Houston 3-1 in the eighth inning to secure the win.
