Alvarez Powers Astros to Shutout

Yordan Alvarez scored on two hits and drove in two runs to lead the Houston Astros past the Athletics 4-0 on Saturday. The home team’s offense stayed connected throughout the middle innings, preventing the visitors from threatening the scoreboard. The Astros improved to 65-64 on the season, while the Athletics fell to 49-80.

The game was played at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas, before a crowd of 28,477.

Scoring Sequence

The Athletics did not record a run in the top half of any inning. Houston broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth when Carlos Paredes scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Walker. The gap widened in the bottom of the fifth.

Yordan Alvarez doubled to center field to score Jordan Allen, followed immediately by Paredes doubling to right field to drive in Alvarez. The Astros added their final run in the bottom of the seventh. Alvarez reached on a double to shortstop, allowing Luis Delgado to cross the plate.

The Athletics were held scoreless for the entire contest.

Pitching Performance

Hayden Wesneski earned the win for Houston. He pitched five innings, allowing one hit and three walks while striking out four batters. He did not allow earned runs.

The bullpen maintained the no-hitter threat for the remainder of the game. Bennett Sousa pitched one inning, allowing two hits with no earned runs and striking out three. Bryan Abreu followed for one inning, allowing no hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Steven Okert and Enyel De Los Santos each pitched one inning without allowing hits, walks, or earned runs. For the Athletics, J.T. Ginn took the loss.

He pitched five innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs while issuing two walks and striking out four. Elvis Alvarado pitched one inning, allowing one hit with no earned runs and one strikeout. Drew Rom pitched one and one-third innings, allowing two hits and one earned run while issuing one walk and striking out one.

Hayden Juenger pitched two-thirds of an inning without allowing hits, walks, or earned runs.
