Thomas Jefferson High band students start early practices for fall season

Thomas Jefferson High School band students have returned to the halls and practice fields before the school year begins, using the final days of summer break to prepare for football games, performances and competitions this fall.

The early practices serve as an unofficial start to the school year for the band, with students working on skills, endurance and teamwork. Senior Andrea S. said the preparation began with student leaders before the full band arrived.

"The first week was for leaders," Andrea said. "We went over the fundamentals so we could teach the members. Things like posture and staying in line all come together to form one big picture. We tell everyone to be very aware of the people around them."

Andrea, Anahi L. and Leslie M. also attended drum major camp during the summer, where they learned leadership skills and how to teach others. Anahi said the camp focused on "connecting with people and learning how to lead the whole band."

At Thomas Jefferson, students begin practice at 7 a.m., spending mornings outside learning drills and afternoons rehearsing music. Anahi said the group continues working through the demanding schedule and looks forward to football games and halftime shows.

Students also described the friendships formed during long rehearsals. "We spend so much time together that we form a special bond," Andrea said. "We’re close to a family."
