Dallas ISD highlights free extracurricular programs for 2026-27 school year

Dallas ISD students will have access to 12 free extracurricular activities across five program areas as the 2026-2027 school year approaches, according to the district’s Student Activities Department.

The department has offered free extracurricular programs for nearly 20 years, giving students opportunities to explore interests beyond the classroom. More than 3,000 students participate in at least one extracurricular activity each year. In recent years, programs with high participation have included chess, cheer, esports and UIL.

The activities available to students in all grades fall under five areas: sports, visual and performing arts, academic studies, service and leadership. Meals and transportation are included for all activities, along with items such as caps and T-shirts that students earn during the year. Participation also may connect students with scholarship opportunities and national competitions.

Dr. Antonio Verduzco, director of Student Activities, said the department tracks student interest trends and works to turn popular hobbies into fully funded, districtwide clubs.

After the success of the chess program, Student Activities will offer mahjong at each of the district’s 58 middle schools this school year, with the hope of eventually expanding the program to elementary and high schools.

Families are encouraged to contact their child’s school to help students find an activity that fits their interests and sign up.
