Dallas ISD Announces 12 Free Extracurriculars for 2026-2027

Dallas ISD has announced that students across all grade levels can participate in 12 free distinct activities during the 2026-2027 school year. The programs are organized into five focus areas: athletics, visual and performing arts, academics, service, and leadership and avocation.

The Student Activities department reports that more than 3,000 students participate in at least one extracurricular program annually, with each program averaging 500 to 600 participants. Recent high-engagement activities include chess, cheer, e-sports, and UIL. The district states that participation enhances personal growth and helps build confident futures.

For all 12 activities, the district provides meals, transportation, and gear incentives such as hats and T-shirts. Participation may also open doors to scholarship opportunities and national-level competitions. Antonio Verduzco, director of Student Activities, noted that the department monitors trending student interests to create fully-funded, districtwide clubs.

Following the success of the chess program, the department will introduce mahjong across all 58 middle schools this school year, with plans to expand to elementary and high school levels. Verduzco, a Skyline High School graduate and former educator, emphasized the financial accessibility of these programs.

"Every student has a gift. It could be athletics or academics, or it can stem from a social need. A lot of the time, parents have to pay for these opportunities, so this is very unique to Dallas ISD," Verduzco said.

"In all 12 of our activities, it brings out critical thinking, strategy, and presentation skills, creating an opportunity to break out of yourself and see that you can be very successful."
