Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson provided updates on key election programs during her final week in office, highlighting initiatives aimed at securing the upcoming November election. Nelson stated that election integrity is a cornerstone of her work and that these updates reflect efforts to further security over the last three years.
The Office of the Texas Secretary of State has launched Election Security Assessments to review protocols for all 254 counties. This program examines physical security at storage facilities, polling locations, and central counting stations, alongside information technology security. The initiative is funded by an $8 million legislative appropriation and marks the first time such assessments have been conducted since 2019.
Nelson noted that the state and counties are partnering to review critical systems and utilize best practices.
Regarding voter list maintenance, the Elections Division reviewed the statewide database for registrations using commercial mailboxes instead of physical residences. Texas law requires voter registrations to be associated with a physical residence, though P.O. boxes may be used for mailing. The office identified 8,537 registrations tied to 1,069 likely commercial addresses.
