Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux outlined the Dallas Police Department’s expanding use of unmanned aerial vehicles and strengthened regional partnerships as key components of public safety strategy. The details emerged during an appearance on the June 29 episode of the program Let's Talk Local, hosted by Sarah Zubiate Bennett.
Comeaux described the department’s drone-as-first-responder program, noting that the technology allows officers to assess situations before arriving on scene. He explained that a drone can reach a reported incident within one to three minutes, providing real-time visual information. This capability helps command determine the appropriate number of officers needed for a call.
In one example, Comeaux cited a report of two men fighting in the street. If the drone footage shows the subjects have left, officers can be redirected to other urgent matters. If the situation appears more dangerous than initially reported, responding units can approach with better situational awareness. Comeaux stated that this approach helps keep officers safe by reducing uncertainty.
The department currently operates approximately eight or nine active drones. Comeaux said DPD aims to at least double or triple that fleet size and is seeking government grants to fund the expansion.
Addressing privacy concerns, Comeaux clarified that the drones do not record continuously while flying. Recording begins only when the drone arrives at the location associated with a specific police call, similar to what an officer would observe upon arrival.
The chief also discussed preparations for FIFA events and the influx of visitors to North Texas. He encouraged attendees to drink responsibly and emphasized the importance of hydration, particularly for those unfamiliar with the Texas heat. Comeaux urged visitors to drink water between alcoholic beverages.
