America's Best Half-Miler Has Homework: Lutkenhaus Starts His Senior Year

The most dominant American 800-meter runner of 2026 started school this week. Not a training camp. School.

Cooper Lutkenhaus, the 17-year-old from Justin who swept the U.S. indoor and outdoor 800-meter titles this summer, began his senior year at Northwest High School on Wednesday, the first day on Northwest ISD's calendar.

The résumé he brought to first period

His July 26 national title came in 1:43.48, with a winning margin of more than a second over Wes Ferguson, built on a breakaway over the final 250 meters and a closing 200 of 25.32. LetsRun called it the largest winning margin at the U.S. championships since 2014.

The outdoor crown, added to the indoor title he won last winter, made him the U.S. champion at 800 meters both indoors and out in the same season.

Along the way this summer: the fastest outdoor 800 in the world for 2026, and a Diamond League victory in Oslo over an Olympic silver medalist. He set the under-18 world record as a junior.

No racing until the indoor season, January at the earliest, by his own account. For a Dallas-Fort Worth sports market accustomed to its stars arriving via the draft, the region's most internationally significant athlete this summer may be a high school senior from the northwest exurbs who spent Wednesday finding his classes.

The 2028 Olympics sit conveniently after graduation.
